Some quick sketches of my model before moving onto the grand finale. It does of course always help to plan out your work, in terms of proportion and position, before settling down for the big piece.
I really enjoyed doing this drawing, the time actually flew by when I was concentrating on it. I didn't do the whole two hours, I have to admit, but it was close to. I tried to concentrate on line rather than tone as specified, which was difficult, as I kept wanting to fill in the spaces with tone. My model and I sat outside as it was a beautiful day, and she read whilst I sketched. I used cartridge paper as opposed to the paper I would usually choose for sketches, and the graphite pencils worked well on the texture of the paper. I spent the majority of the time doing an outline and concentrating on the details; something that I recently discovered thanks to the previous exercises in this assignment; outlining the areas of shadow as well as the lines that make up the features of the face. By doing this, there was less confusion, especially when coming back to the sketch after taking a break. The thighs of my model in this sketch are a little too long unfortunately, I think I over compensated in terms of the angle I was drawing. Because one of her legs was leaning towards me slightly and I made the seat of the chair too big, hence the thighs being too long; they obviously had to come over the edge of the chair, otherwise she wouldn't have been able bend her legs to have her feet touching the floor. Although I struggled keeping the shading minimal, by using less tone, I have a coherent drawing that I can be proud of.
